This book pays a deserving tribute to one of the missing links in our guitar DNA. The man I draw from the shadows of our diaspora has been a tireless craftsman of the classical guitar. He was a trailblazer who helps legions of guitarists today through their promising present with his legacy. Sometimes we fail to realize that, before our feet even touched the ground, there were others creating paths for us to follow through the obstacles to reach our goals. And today it is my turn, (as a guitarist and a representative of those who did not emigrate), to speak of an illustrious compatriot whom I had never met but to whom I felt bound by the umbilical cords of love, art and nationality - those indestructibly binding connections that embrace us as we are brothers from afar who meet again. I refer with special pride to our historical sibling, Elias Barreiro, a goldsmith of the six-string guitar who spread our culture and special Cuban works around the world. The story I narrate developed as an epic beyond the sea in another country and in another language. Unintentionally, the protagonist was a messenger of a vision and approach to the art of the guitar that, in one way or another, might be defined as "an extension of the Cuban guitar abroad". People need to understand that generations of students, especially those from 1968, when it came to my attention, and onwards in Cuba benefited anonymously from the efforts of Elias Barreiro. Fortunately, he had a compulsive custom of acquiring scores released for the instrument. This material was later, in one way or another, passed into our hands thereby spreading his substantial contributions. But let us not rush ahead in this story of a valued part of our heritage.
